During a visit to the Italian Parliament on Thursday (4), King Charles III made a humorous statement about the British influence on Italian cuisine.

The British monarch said: “I only hope you will forgive us if we occasionally corrupt your wonderful cuisine,” in reference to the international popularity of Italian cuisine.

It was the first time a British king had addressed the Italian Parliament. Charles III highlighted the historical ties between the two countries and the cultural connection with the European continent.

When mentioning William Shakespeare, the sovereign recalled that “a third of the works” of the playwright take place in Italian territory, which he called “Belpaese”, an expression used to refer to Italy with affection.

Another highlight was the memory of Giuseppe Garibaldi's visit to the United Kingdom in the 19th century.

“When Garibaldi arrived in our country, the people were infected by Garibaldimania: they even created a biscuit in his name, the greatest sign of honor for us,” said the king.

Charles III's visit strengthens diplomatic ties between Italy and the United Kingdom, with an emphasis on shared culture and history.
