Bridge collapses in northern Italy and leaves dozens of people dead and injured.
The number of people who died after part of a bridge collapsed in Genoa, Italy, on Tuesday morning (35), has risen to 14, according to Civil Defense. However, information on the number of victims is still conflicting. Rescue efforts continue.
Among the dead is a young girl, said the deputy minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Edoardo Rixi. The Morandi Bridge is in a densely populated area of Genoa. The A10 highway passes through it, which connects cities in the North of Italy to the South of France.
The incident occurred around 11:15 am (around 7:15 am Brasília time) during heavy rain that was hitting the region.

Most of the structure fell into the bed of the Polcevera stream, but huge sections fell onto houses, warehouses and the streets below. Luigi D'Angelo, an Italian Civil Defense official, told Reuters there were around 30 cars and between 5 and 10 trucks on the section of the bridge that collapsed.
According to the newspaper “La Stampa”, the collapse hit the parking lot of Ansaldo Energia, one of the main energy production plants in Italy. Apparently the place was empty.
