The Italian Parliament has taken another step towards approving the tax 600 Euros for the recognition of Italian citizenship.
A Budget Committee approved the amendment included in the Maneuver 2025 (Budget Law), which now goes to a plenary vote, with a high chance of being approved, given the parliamentary majority of the center-right government.
The measure, harshly criticized by opposition sectors, significantly increases the costs for descendants of Italians seeking recognition of citizenship. jure sanguinis. The proposal includes:
- 600 Euros per applicant at Italian consulates (double the current rate);
- 600 Euros in requests made directly to Italian town halls (common);
- Additional fee of 600 euros for legal proceedings for recognition of citizenship, applied by each applicant from the family nucleus.
Revolt and harsh criticism
the deputy Fabio Porta, which represents Italians abroad, did not hold back in criticizing the government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. In an interview with Italianism, Porta stated:
“What happened today is something that in 20 years of politics in favor of Italians abroad, in three terms in the Chamber of Deputies and a brief term in the Senate, never seen. "
Porta highlighted that the measure creates unfair economic barriers and favors only the richest:
“We are only favoring the richest, who will be the only ones who can apply for citizenship… Citizenship is valid for the rich, it is valid for friends, but does not apply to ordinary citizens. "
Porta was even more emphatic in criticizing the government's stance towards the Italian community abroad:
“This government is proving to be, without a shadow of a doubt, the worst government in history with regard to Italians abroad.”
Contradiction and privileges
The deputy also drew attention to the contradiction of the Italian government, which quickly granted citizenship to Argentine President Javier Milei while imposing bureaucratic and financial obstacles on ordinary families:
“At the same time that the government takes this negative attitude towards citizenship jure sanguinis, in a few hours authorizes the citizenship of the president of Argentina. Very sad, very regrettable. "
Final vote without changes
The text approved by the committee must be put to a vote next Friday (20) by means of trust vote, a mechanism that prevents any changes to the text. Porta, in turn, promised to continue fighting against the measure:
“I will proudly vote against this budget bill and against this government.”
Impact on the Italian-Brazilian community
If approved, the fee will come into effect on January 1, 2025 and should directly harm thousands of descendants of Italians in Brazil and throughout South America, where one of the largest communities of Italian origin in the world is concentrated.
With the euro rising against the real, Italian citizenship could become an inaccessible privilege for many.
