Find out how to behave when going through immigration at airports

The number of Brazilian citizens prevented from legally entering the European Union increased by 61,5% in 2018, according to data from Frontex, the bloc's border control agency.

According to Brussels, 4.984 Brazilians were barred from entering the EU last year, compared to 3.086 in 2017. This number places Brazil in seventh place on the list of most citizens prevented from entering the European Union, behind Ukraine (with 58 barred), Russia (26), Albania (25), Belarus (8), Serbia (7) and Moldova (6).

On the other hand, it is believed that the number of illegal Brazilian immigrants in the bloc has increased.

Flight tickets purchased, hotel reservation confirmed and tour itinerary chosen. All ready to travel, right?

You can never be too careful when going through immigration at airports, whether in Italy or any other country in the European Union.

See tips on how to get through checkpoints smoothly and learn how to adapt your behavior to the circumstances in which you find yourself.

10 tips to avoid being blocked

1. Passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival.

2. Tickets for the entire trip, until the return date to Brazil.

3. Proof of paid accommodation reservation. If you are staying at a friend's house, you will need an invitation letter from the hosts. People traveling to do the Italian citizenship process, or other events, must include a printed invitation letter from the contracted company.

4. Proof of financial means to stay in Italy throughout the stay. The minimum amount required is 15 euros per day per person, in cash, traveler's checks, international credit cards. Credit cards must be accompanied by a letter from the bank specifying the limit.

5. International medical insurance is required for a minimum value of 30 thousand euros.

6. Always tell the truth when answering the immigration officer's questions, related to how many days you intend to stay in the country, what places you will visit, if you know anyone there, what is the purpose of the trip, etc...

7. Always take printed, in your hand luggage, your return plane ticket, your hotel or Airbnb reservation (or the contact details and an invitation letter of the friend or family member who will be hosting you). Several countries may require the traveler to show this reservation at their borders.

8. Wear appropriate clothing. Tourists do not need formal clothes. Instead of impressing the officers, you may arouse suspicion. For them, this could be an indication that the person wants to use their good appearance to avoid interrogation and then stay in the country illegally….

9. Don’t trust the “it didn’t work for me” recommendations from your online friend. Prefer to follow the official recommendations of consulates, embassies and airports.

10. Going through immigration is the most serious moment of the trip. Therefore, behave formally: leave your friends aside so that their behavior, or the interview, does not influence your final result.
