Fuel prices rose again in Italy during the weekend return from the holidays. On the national road network, the average price at self-service gas stations was €2,010 per liter for gasoline and €2,130 for diesel, compared to €2,008 and €2,128 the previous day. On highways, gasoline reached €2,087 and diesel €2,203 per liter, compared to €2,085 and €2,200, reported the newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore.
With these prices, filling a 50-liter tank on highways costs more than 104 euros with gasoline and 110 euros with diesel. The data is released by the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy, the department responsible for monitoring prices at gas stations. The increase coincides with the so-called counterexodusThe mass return of Italians from their summer vacation spots is expected, with an estimated 24 million trips and heavy traffic on the main routes.
The consumer association Codacons calculated that the additional cost of gasoline and diesel over the weekend of August 22nd and 23rd was €406.704.000, compared to the same period in 2025, assuming the same number of cars on the road. The organization called the increase "a veritable tax on the return from vacation" and demanded immediate government action to reduce fuel costs.
