Requests to connect new data centers to the Italian electricity grid total 95,38 gigawatts, a figure compiled on August 21 by Terna, the transmission network operator. In 2021, such requests totaled 1 GW. They increased to 5,40 GW in 2023 and to 31,28 GW the following year, reported the newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore.
The concentration is in the north of the country. Lombardy alone accounts for 290 requests and 46 GW, mostly located in Milan, followed by Lazio, Piedmont, and Puglia. Of the 531 requests received so far by Terna, 300 have been submitted since January, totaling 58,7 GW, 48,2% more than in the first eight months of 2025, when there were 215 requests and 39,6 GW. Only 15 projects, equivalent to 1,88 GW, have reached the most mature phase, a sign that most of the demand is potential and unlikely to materialize.
In August, 8 new applications were registered, totaling 0,87 GW, and 6 applications expired, representing approximately 1,3 GW. In July, 17 applications were received, totaling 1,68 GW. Applications primarily come from companies that design and develop such facilities or renewable energy sources, as well as special purpose entities and the real estate sector. About 10% of applications are directly attributable to data center operators or dedicated funds.
