Sergio Mattarella seems to have found his preferred destination for escaping Rome in the summer. For the sixth time since assuming the Presidency of the Republic in 2015, the Italian head of state has chosen Alto Adige, in the Dolomites, to spend part of his August vacation.
In this year, Mattarella He returned to Siusi, a small town in the municipality of Castelrotto, in the province of Bolzano. Accompanied by his daughter Laura, he will stay for about three weeks at Villa Ausserer, an Italian Army structure surrounded by mountains and near Alpe di Siusi.
The president's relationship with the mountains of Alto Adige began during his 2016 vacation, when he chose Selva di Val Gardena and stayed at the Carabinieri's alpine training center in Vallunga.
The following year, Mattarella moved to a different valley, Dobbiaco, in the Alta Val Pusteria. This location, surrounded by the Dolomites and close to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Lake Braies, would host him again years later.
The Supreme Court reaffirmed: citizenship is born with the person.
- New legal front opened
- Processes can still be filed.
- Individual assessment before any decision.

The return to the Dolomites
After six years, Mattarella returned to Dobbiaco in 2023. During his stay, he went hiking and sightseeing in the region, including a visit to Lake Braies. His schedule remained largely free of public engagements.
In 2024, he repeated the choice. That year, Rai reported that it was the fourth time the president had chosen Alto Adige to spend a few days of rest. He stayed again in Dobbiaco, at the Air Force base.
The change came in 2025, when he left Dobbiaco and chose Siusi allo Sciliar. Mattarella then moved to Villa Ausserer, the logistics base for the Italian Army's Alpine Troops.
Now, in 2026, he repeated Siusi's feat, completing his sixth holiday season in Alto Adige since arriving at the Quirinale and his fourth consecutive season in the region since 2023.
The preference for the area is not unique to Mattarella. Other Italian presidents have also chosen the Alto Adige mountains for periods of rest. Sandro Pertini spent time in Selva di Val Gardena, while Carlo Azeglio Ciampi used Villa Ausserer itself, now chosen by Mattarella.
Mattarella's six vacations in Alto Adige:
- 2016: Selva di Val Gardena
- 2017: dobbiaco
- 2023: dobbiaco
- 2024: dobbiaco
- 2025: Siusi
