During a hearing in the Italian Senate, this Wednesday (7), the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reinforced the strategic importance of Italian communities abroad.
“We are renewing our relationship with Latin America, to which we are deeply linked also thanks to an extraordinary presence of Italian communities, which are our best and widest diplomatic network,” declared Meloni.
The Prime Minister used the term “national interest” to defend the connection with Italians outside the country. “Ultimately, I think we have affirmed — and are affirming — the national interest, and we have done so, yes, with reflection.”
The speech took place as Parliament discusses the Decree-Law 36which could change the rules for Italian citizenship by descent – ius sanguinis.
O Decree-Law 36 was articulated by Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani. The vote in the Senate is expected to take place between May 13 and 15. The text will then go to the Chamber of Deputies.
If it is not converted into law by May 27, the decree will lose its validity. The content of the proposal has not yet been released in detail, but it is already generating anticipation among Italian descendants.
