A survey published in Italy showed that extra virgin olive oil is present in the shopping carts of 96% of consumers in the country, mainly because it represents a “social good” and is considered an essential ingredient.
According to the survey by the Nomisma-Sol2Expo Observatory, 36% of people interviewed considered olive oil a healthy ally to be consumed with vegetables, fish and even fruits.
Furthermore, the words most associated by Italians with olive oil were “health”, “sustainability”, “nature”, “quality”, “well-being” and “benefit”.
In another section, the study revealed that the purchase of extra virgin olive oil is increasingly motivated by indications of the origin of the product. This factor is considered important by four out of every 10 consumers who are aware of the origin of Made in Italy.
With over four thousand active mills, Italy is one of the world’s leading producers of olive oil. In the first 10 months of 2024, exports of Italian extra virgin olive oil grew by 52,5% in value, reaching around 2,1 billion euros.
The nation exports the product to 160 different countries, however, more than 60% of Italian exports of extra virgin olive oil are concentrated between the United States, Germany, France, Canada and Japan. (HANDLE)
