Chinese open first evangelical seminary in Italy

The city of Rome, birthplace of Catholicism and seat of the Vatican State, has just welcomed the Italian-Chinese Theological Seminary, an evangelical institution coordinated by a group of 55 churches. Its objective will be to train pastors for Chinese-speaking communities in Italy and the rest of Europe.

The Chinese Italian Theological Seminary (ICTSThe church, inaugurated on April 12 in Rome, represents more than just another symptom of the growing dominance of evangelical religions worldwide.

The investment is also symptomatic for being of Chinese origin, since China, another symbol of global domination in recent times, is now strong through religion in one of the countries where it is most traditional.

Training

The inauguration was attended by around 300 people, many representatives from Chinese churches in Italy and some from other European countries, as well as around 30 Italian guests.

This new institution will carry out its activities in a renovated hotel that was acquired by Chinese Christian Church in Italy, a grouping of 55 Chinese churches. The building is located within the area of Tor Vergata University.

According to the seminary leadership, its goal is to train new generations of gospel ministers for Chinese churches in Italy and Europe and encourage the work of the gospel in Italy.

Focus on the mission

The ceremony was led by Liang Yanming and included moments of songs and prayers. Pastor Lin Ri Feng's sermon emphasized that training must be for everyone, with the explanation of the Word of God according to the truth and with a missionary focus aimed at “all people”.

A Italian Evangelical Alliance (AEI) participated in the event. Leonardo De Chirico, leader of the Theology and Dialogue commission, thanked the fact that the institute is “Italian” and “Chinese” and highlighted the desire for integration and partnership in the Gospel with local evangelical churches.

He encouraged Chinese Christian leaders to “understand Italy, its cultural and religious challenges.” Evangelical Christians, he added, are “here to collaborate.” AEI gave several books of Italian evangelical theology as gifts for the Seminary library.
