Bari will adopt the French model and offer financial compensation to those who give up their car and opt for a bicycle.
Bari, capital of Puglia, is the first Italian city to adopt a model that is becoming famous in France: paying citizens who exchange their car for a bicycle on the way to work. The city council announced plans to guarantee a monthly bank transfer of 25 euros to those who want to join this movement. The Sustainable Mobility Experimental Project was financed by the Ministry of the Environment, according to the newspaper La Reppublica.

“Those who cycle don’t just gain health,” declared the mayor of Bari, Antonio Decaro, when announcing the start of a test period that will last four months. According to him, the objective for 2019 is to double the number of bicycles in Bari.
Each cyclist will be equipped with a Gift Sets with anti-fraud GPS that will monitor the kilometers traveled and every month there will be a competition, designed to reward the ten workers who cycled the most, with an extra bonus of 50 euros.
