Summer time began in Italy this Sunday (27). The clock hands were moved forward by one hour. This practice, however, has been discussed for years in many European countries that would like to abolish daylight saving time to adopt a single system.

With the change, the time difference between Brazil and Italy becomes 5h.

Italy decided to maintain summer time

Daylight saving time is a international agreement used to reduce electricity consumption by trying to make the most of daylight hours.

The origin of daylight saving time dates back to First World War, when many conflict-affected countries decided to set their clocks forward one hour during the Summer, as energy saving was considered a priority in times of war. Also in Italy, summer time was adopted for the first time in 1916. The measure was adopted for the same reasons also during the Second World War.

However, it was only in 1966 that Italy definitively applied daylight hours. summer and solar time for the first time. Initially, the time change occurred on the last Sunday in May and again on the last Sunday in September. In 1980, it was decided to extend the duration of summer time, bringing it forward to the first Sunday in April.

In 1996, the European Union decided to comply and member states decreed that daylight saving time should come into effect after the spring equinox. Specifically, the last Sunday in March the hands move forward while the last Sunday in October comes into effect and the hands move backwards.

Changing the time is a topic that has been debated by many member states for years. Since 1996, all countries in the European Union, Great Britain, Switzerland and Eastern European countries use the same calendar for daylight saving time, even if some no longer agree. Until October 2011, Russia also adopted the time change, but chose to abandon this practice. The countries of northern Europe, in fact, given their greater proximity to the North Pole, have never benefited much from the greater natural light that has become present with changing times. Furthermore, according to some, the time change would cause effects on sleep and health.
