The global demand for spaghetti exceeded 16 million tons per year, and Italy, the main European producer of durum wheat, with more than 1,3 million hectares cultivated, contributes approximately 25% of the grains used in pasta worldwide.
The figures were released during the World Durum and Pasta Forum, held in Rome, the Italian capital, which brought together more than 300 operators in the sector.
“The excellence of our agri-food sector has contributed greatly to the success of this exceptional expression of Italian know-how in the world,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani in a message sent to the event.
“In 2023, our country’s agri-food exports reached a record level of 63 billion euros (R$382 billion), with a growth of 7%. A trend that is also confirmed in the first six months of 2024, with an increase of 7,5%”, he added.
