A survey released on the occasion of “World Pasta Day”, celebrated on October 25th, revealed that pasta carbonara, lasagna and pasta with tomato sauce are among the most popular recipes among foreigners who visit Italy on vacation.
The study carried out by the Touring Club Italia association for the Unione Italiana Food investigated the relationship between tourists visiting the European country and pasta to draw up a ranking of the 10 favorite recipes among foreigners.
According to the results, more than one in two restaurant owners (54%) stated that at least half of their customers are foreigners and, according to seven in 10 establishments (72%), the food and wine culture of customers from abroad has increased.
For pasta, the format most appreciated by foreign tourists is, surprisingly due to their lack of confidence with the fork, long pasta, with 46% of preferences, against 17% who prefer short pasta and 38% who do not like it.
In the “Top 10” of the most ordered pasta dishes by foreigners are spaghetti carbonara (7,8), lasagna bolognese (7) and pasta with tomato sauce (6,9), which appear in the first three positions respectively.
The classification continues with spaghetti al vôngole (6,8), bucatini à matriciana (6,7), spaghetti cacio e pepe (5,3), tortellini in brodo (4,3), pasta alla norma (3,8), Trophy with pesto (3.4), Orecchiette with rapa top – turnip leaves – (2.9).
“When choosing a tourist destination, gastronomic and wine experiences now have an increasingly decisive weight”, emphasizes Margherita Mastromauro, president of the pasta manufacturers Unione Italiana Food.
According to the study, approximately 56% of pasta packaging produced in Italy is exported, reinforcing the success of Italian pasta abroad thanks to the manufacturers' expertise. According to Mastromauro, "Italian restaurants around the world and at home" create "dishes that convey the pleasure and joy of Mediterranean cuisine."HANDLE)
