O Children's Day It is a date celebrated in many parts of the world, but the ways in which this celebration takes place vary from country to country. Two nations that demonstrate these cultural differences in a striking way are Brazil and Italy.
When is it celebrated?
In Brazil, the Children's Day is celebrated on October 12th, a date that has become synonymous with gifts, toys and family celebrations. This date was chosen to coincide with the Day of Our Lady of Aparecida, the country's patron saint. The celebration is an opportunity for children to be spoiled with gifts, sweets and special activities.
In Italy, the situation is somewhat different. There, Children’s Day, or “Giorno dei Bambini”, is celebrated on November 20th, which is also the Universal Children's Day celebrated internationally.
This date was established in 1954 by the United Nations General Assembly as a day to promote children's rights around the world. In Italy, the emphasis is on awareness and reflection on children's rights and not so much on gifts.
Cultural differences in celebrations
One of the most notable cultural distinctions between Brazil and Italy in relation to Children's Day is the tradition of giving gifts and toys. In Brazil, it is common to give children toys, clothes, and other treats. Stores and malls offer special promotions, and families get together to celebrate with parties and events.
In Italy, the tradition of giving gifts is less important. The main focus is on education and raising awareness about children's rights. To the schools they often organize educational activities to teach children about their rights and responsibilities in society.
Furthermore, it is common for Italian children to receive a yellow flower, the symbol of Universal Children's Day, as a way of highlighting the importance of a bright future for all children. (Photo: Depositphotos)
