Unlimited job openings for Italian-Brazilians
If Brazil continued to be subject to quotas, there would be few authorizations for self-employment in four years. With the new rule, Italian-Brazilians will be able to obtain unlimited permits for subordinate jobs.
The measure allows descendants of Italians with citizenship from one of the listed countries to apply for residency for subordinate work, outside the limits of the quota system.
After two years of legal residency, these workers will be able to apply for Italian citizenship through facilitated naturalization.
Criticism from the Italian community abroad
The possibility of naturalization after two years is seen by some members of the Italian community abroad as a limited concession. Representatives criticize the measure as a "crumb," given the recent restrictions imposed on the recognition of citizenship by descent, which now applies only to children and grandchildren of Italians.
The Constitutional Court of Italy has scheduled a hearing for March 11, 2026, at 9:30 AM. the trial that will define the future of Decree-Law 36/2025.
Recovery of Italian roots
The policy falls under the concept of "recupero delle radici italiane," which encourages descendants to return to their roots. This principle was included in Article 1-bis of the... Decree-Law 36 of 2025, during its passage through the Senate.
Another objective of the rule is to reduce the overload on the Italian judiciary, which deals with thousands of cases concerning the recognition of Italian citizenship by descent (jure sanguinis).
The decree was signed by Antonio Tajani, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and by the Ministers of the Interior and Labor.
