Quarantine Romeo and Juliet
Quarantine Romeo and Juliet: Italian couple finally meet

Dating began after the couple from Verona met on the balcony during the lockdown imposed by Italy

Finally holding hands. After a month and a half of looking at each other from balconies, thirty meters away and whispering words into the phone, lawyer Paola Agnelli, 39, and banker Michele D'Alpaos, 38, met.

A love story, in a district of Verona – and told by Italianism –, was born during the most critical period in Italy, which was experiencing absolute social distancing due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The two met during the “ritual” of songs sung on balconies at 18pm every day, and their stories made the pages of newspapers around the world, reminiscent of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

In love, the two had to wait until the end of the lockdown to have their first personal contact.

They didn't want to put the elderly parents they live with at risk, they didn't want to break the rules at such a dramatic time in the country.

On Monday, May 4, when Italy became a little freer from quarantine, an infinite hug took over the couple. “We hugged each other very tightly, we said we loved each other. We were both shaking”, says Paola.

“So far, we have only been able to see each other during lunch, but we are organizing dinner at my house”, reveals lawyer Michele.

Paola and Michele's quarantine was marked by long phone calls, by love songs dedicated from one balcony to another, by banners hanging from the roofs of the condominiums. “We want to take advantage of this moment, slowly, step by step. Possibly hand in hand”, says Paola.

“It’s better than we imagined,” they say enthusiastically.
