Italy, which appears to have reached “the peak” of the spread of the new coronavirus, is preparing measures for a “gradual and controlled” relaxation of the restrictions imposed, but warns that there is still a long way to go before a return to normality.

The widespread use of masks, screening of residents, the multiplication of diagnostic tests and specialized assistance at home are among the measures proposed this Sunday by the Italian Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza.

The country that records the most deaths associated with Covid-19 worldwide, has seen a sustained trend towards a reduction in the number of new cases of infection in recent days and, on Saturday, announced the drop, for the first time, in the number of patients admitted to intensive care units.

Despite this evolution, the population “cannot let its guard down” and must continue to respect the quarantine measures, which “cannot be eased at the moment”, said Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte this week when announcing the extension of confinement. until April 13th.

According to the director of Civil Protection, Angelo Borrelli, the country should continue the quarantine at least until the long weekend of May 1st, adding that the decision is up to the government.

Borrelli also admitted that on May 16 the country will enter “phase two”, of “synchrony with the virus”, but only “if the evolution does not change”.
