Skier Matilde Lorenzi, young promise of winter sports in Italy and who had suffered a serious accident last Monday (28), did not survive his injuries and died on Tuesday morning (29).
The death was announced by the Ministry of Defense, as the 19-year-old athlete was a corporal in the Italian Army.
“The entire Army unites around Matilde’s loved ones and shares with moved solidarity in the pain of this dramatic episode,” said the Chief of Staff, General Carmine Masiello.
Lorenzi, a member of the Italian national junior alpine ski team, fell while training on the Senales Valley glacier in the northernmost province of Bolzano.
According to an initial reconstruction of the case, the young woman's skis broke and caused her to hit the ground violently with her face.
“The terrible news of the premature death of Corporal Matilde Lorenzi, a promising Azzurro skier, has left me deeply saddened,” wrote Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on social media, expressing solidarity with the skier’s family and colleagues.
“I am saddened by the passing of Matilde Lorenzi, a crystalline talent broken by fate. Rest in peace, young champion,” reinforced the Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani. (HANDLE)
