Italy officially withdraws Rome's candidacy for the 2024 Olympics

Roman mayor considers that hosting the Games would represent “mortgaging the future” of Rome.

The president of the Italian Olympic Committee, Giovanni Malago, has definitively ruled out Rome's bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games, after the city's new mayor refused to support the project.

"Today I wrote to the International Olympic Committee to withdraw Rome 2024 from the competition," Malago declared at a press conference in the Italian capital.

Rome's candidacy to host the 2024 Olympic Games had already been abandoned when the mayor of the Italian metropolis, Virginia Raggi, stated at the end of September that she would not support holding the event. The city council supported the president and ended the race for the seat.

In her speech, the mayor had stated that the people of Rome could not afford another “concrete Olympics”. The Italian Olympic Committee had even considered seeking support from the federal government, but decided against it and stated that a new attempt was unlikely for another 20 years.

The Italian capital already hosted the event in 1960.

With Rome's withdrawal from the list of candidates to host the 2024 Olympics, only three cities are still fighting for the status: Budapest, in Hungary, Los Angeles, in the United States, and Paris, in France. The results of the vote that will determine the winner will be announced in September 2017.
