Italy prepares to declare emergency and public calamity

Around 600 people were left homeless, 15 homes were hit and the facades of buildings and churches were destroyed.

Following the earthquake, possibly caused by the eruption of Mount Etna in Sicily, southern Italy, the Italian government is preparing to declare a state of emergency and public calamity in the region. More than 600 people have been displaced, and homes, buildings and churches have been damaged. At least six municipalities are said to be the most affected by the impacts of the earthquake.

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini arrives Hoje (27) to Catania, the area most affected by the 4.8 earthquake on the Richter scale and where the Etna volcano is located, whose eruption is considered the main cause of the earthquakes. The expectation is that a state of emergency will be declared.

Before that, the Government Council of the Sicily Region will meet to declare a state of calamity. The body's president, Nello Musumeci, received support and solidarity from politicians from neighboring regions, but is concerned about restarting the reconstruction process.
