More than 100 former French and British diplomats have signed a joint letter calling for urgent action to get Israel to accept a Palestinian state, including a ban on arms trade and sales, suspension of the association agreement between the European Union and Israel, and the trade agreement between the United Kingdom and Israel, the newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore reported.
The document was signed by 52 former French diplomats and 50 former British ambassadors, many of whom held high-level posts in the Middle East. It was addressed to President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Andy Burnham and delivered to The Guardian and Le Monde. The signatories recall that France and the United Kingdom recognized Palestine as a state in 2025 and affirm that they now have a responsibility to defend “equal rights for Israelis and Palestinians”.
In the text, the former diplomats state that two million Palestinians are confined to 30% of a devastated territory in Gaza and that more than 1.200 Palestinians have been killed since the so-called ceasefire. They also cite home demolitions and settler violence in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. The letter was released two days after the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and eight other countries condemned Israeli tenders for the E1 settlement project.
