The painting “Rest on the Flight to Egypt”, by the Italian Renaissance master Titian, was auctioned for more than 20 million euros by the British house Christie's, in London.
The oil painting, which has already been stolen twice and was abandoned at a London bus stop, was made when the artist was just over 20 years old, and was coveted by emperors, archdukes and art thieves throughout his years. more than five centuries of history.
The price for which the painting was sold had never been reached by the Italian artist. The buyer, however, was not revealed by the auction house.
The work, which depicts Jesus, Mary and Joseph in a moment of rest during the flight to Egypt, has decorated palaces in London, Brussels, Vienna, Paris and, more recently, Longleat House in Wiltshire, seat of the Marquises of Bath and the first safari park outside of Africa, from where it was stolen and later recovered by an art detective.
