Stromboli is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, but this latest eruption was exceptionally intense
On Monday, the Stromboli volcano in Italy spewed ash hundreds of meters into the air and released a pyroclastic flow on its slope, according to the Istituto Nazionale Geofisica e Volcanologia (INGV).
Located on the volcanic island of the Aeolian archipelago, on the north coast of Sicilia, Stromboli is among the most active volcanoes in the world and has been spewing lava from its crater consistently for at least 2 years – earning it the nickname “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean”.
This latest eruption of the Stromboli volcano was larger and more violent than your typical volcanic activity, reports Stephanie Pappas for Live Science.
The ash cloud and subsequent pyroclastic flow – something like an avalanche of superheated ash, fragments of lava and gas flowing downhill – were recorded by INGV cameras.
