A great-grandson of the dictator Benito Mussolini (1883-1945) joined the Lazio under-19 team, a team whose organized fans openly declare their sympathy for fascism.
Romano Floriani Mussolini, 18 years old, is the son of former senator and former deputy Alessandra Mussolini, granddaughter of dictator, and plays as a right back. The aspiring player was part of Lazio's under-18 team, but recently moved up a category and has already made two appearances for the under-19s.
Both times, the full-back used both of his surnames in the lineup. In an interview with the Italian agency Adnkronos, Romano's mother said that there is no risk of her son's surname being “instrumentalized”.
“It’s a topic I’d rather stay out of. My son doesn’t want any interference in his life and things”, declared Alessandra. The young man is also the great-nephew of actress Sophia Loren, sister of his grandmother Maria Scicolone, in turn widow of Romano Mussolini, the dictator's fourth son.
On several occasions, organized Lazio fans they displayed banners or sang songs in support of fascism and Mussolini, especially the members of the former Irriducibili, which recently had its headquarters seized by the Italian police. (Loop)
