The Mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, announced that the famous platform used by the traffic police located in Piazza Venezia has become operational again.
The historic structure came into use in the late 1920s and was initially made of wood and carried by hand at the start of each shift. An agent sits on top of the structure directing traffic at the location.
The platform, which became world-famous in Luigi Zampa's film "Il Vigile" (1960), had been out of use for a long period due to construction work in central Rome.
In “Il Vigile”, Italian actor and comedian Alberto Sordi played police officer Otello Celletti, who used a whistle and white gloves to control traffic in the area. The artist's scenes became very famous and the platform became a great symbol of the capital.

“A few days ago, when I arrived at Campidoglio, I saw the historic traffic police platform operating again in Piazza Venezia. We Romans know her well, also because she appears in a famous scene in a film with Alberto Sordi. Over time, the platform became a symbol of Rome”, wrote Raggi on his social networks.
Fabio Grillo, a local police instructor, said in an interview with ANSA that he was “missing” the platform. The agent has managed traffic in Piazza Venezia since 2004 and is a big movie fan.
“Every time I went up on the platform, many people made jokes about the actor Alberto Sordi and I must say that I am satisfied, she is an important piece of Rome,” said Grillo.
The local police commander, Ugo Angeloni, saluted the police officers who worked on the platform throughout the day. (ANSA).
