Maintaining a traditional current account in Italy costs an average of €101,1 per year, compared to €82,2 in 2014, an increase of €18,9 or 23% in a decade. Expenses for one-off transactions, such as transfers, payments, and withdrawals, rose 34,2%, from €26,6 to €35,7 per year. Fixed costs, which include monthly fees and cards, increased from €55,6 to €65,4, a rise of 17,6%. The data comes from a study by Adusbef based on figures from the Bank of Italy, analyzed by Corriere della Sera and reported by the newspaper Il Messaggero.

The difference between the account types is significant. An online account costs an average of €30,6 per year, less than a third of the cost of a traditional account. A postal account costs €71,6. Adding the three formats together, the weighted average cost falls to €85,3, a result of the widespread use of internet-managed accounts. To these values must be added the stamp duty, which in the Bank of Italy's sample was €16,5 on average.

In the last year of the series, the cost remained practically stable: 101,1 euros in 2024 compared to 100,7 euros in 2023. On May 31, 2026, according to calculations by Adusbef, Italian consumer households had approximately 1.163 billion euros in bank deposits, compared to approximately 906 billion in May 2016, a nominal increase of 257 billion, or 28,3%. Adusbef is the Italian association for the defense of banking service users.
