The famous Amarena bear Abruzzo National Park was fatally shot by a man on the outskirts of San Benedetto dei Marsi.
The tragedy occurred on August 31, 2023, shocking the local community and park authorities.
The hunter claimed that he fired a rifle out of fear, but the action was condemned by the community and authorities.
The shot was heard by Park Guards, who were on patrol in the area, as the brown bear was with her three cubs.

The park's veterinarian and a rescue team immediately went to the scene, but, due to the severity of the injuries, they found the bear dead.
The authorities of the National Park reported that the man responsible for the shooting was identified by the Park Guards and is now under investigation by local authorities, the Carabinieri. He faces four years in prison.
Investigations are currently underway to clarify the details of the tragedy. During the night, the park team worked hard to search for the Orsa Amarena cubs, who are now orphans, while evaluating how to proceed.
The Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise strongly condemned the incident in an official statement: “The episode is extremely serious and causes immense damage to the bear population, which numbers around sixty specimens, affecting one of the most prolific females in history of the park. There is no justification for this act, since Amarena, even though it caused damage to agriculture and livestock, was always compensated by Parco, even outside the limits of the contiguous area, and never posed any threat to human beings.”
Amarena the bear was an iconic figure in the region and her death follows the loss of Juan Carrito, another symbol of the park, in a traffic accident in January 2023. Brown bears are threatened with extinction.
