According to the newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini proposed a triennial contribution of 5% per year on the profits of the ten largest Italian banks. With estimated profits of 30 billion euros, the measure would yield approximately 1,5 billion per year. "I am convinced that the majority will support us," said Salvini, who also stated that he expects the banks to profit 40 or 50 billion euros the following year.
The proposal comes from the Lega party and is part of discussions about the next Italian budget law. Salvini justified the measure by pointing out that part of bank profits derives from state guarantees and, therefore, from citizens. He also cited the Spanish government of Sánchez as a reference: he said he disagreed with everything from that government, except for the economic intervention in Spanish banks.
