According to the newspaper Corriere della Sera, Italian Andy Diaz won gold in the triple jump at the European Championships in Birmingham with 18,15 m, a mark that improved by 28 centimeters the Italian record he already held, of 17,87 m at the Florence Open Championships. It was the first time in his career that Diaz surpassed 18 meters. The distance was 14 centimeters short of Jonathan Edwards' world record of 18,29 m, set in 1995.
Diaz was born in Cuba and was found by coach Fabrizio Donato sleeping on a bench, where he spent the night so as not to miss his place in line at the immigration office. Today he is one of the main stars of the Italian athletics team. The gold came on the day that Italy won seven medals in the competition, including Sofia Fiorini's gold in the marathon race walk. In the triple jump, Andrea Dallavalle won the bronze.
Diaz beat the Portuguese Pichardo, from whom he demanded a rematch. "Before they didn't take me seriously, now they fear me," he said. He recounted that Pichardo had beaten him at the Tokyo World Championships when he was suffering from pubalgia. The medal was dedicated to Donato, who celebrated his birthday in Birmingham. The athlete also left a message: "Jonathan Edwards, I'm coming."
