According to the newspaper Il Tempo, the Italian Interior Minister, Matteo Piantedosi, reported that another 128 irregular immigrants were returned to their countries of origin last week. In an interview at an event of the Fratelli d'Italia party in Sorrento, the minister said: "If re-emigration means more repatriations, that is exactly what this government has done." He recalled that while 4.300 people were repatriated in 2022, by August 7th the number had already reached 5.200.
The issue of irregular immigration remains at the center of the European political agenda. The President of the European Council, Giorgia Meloni, and the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, reinforced via Instagram the alignment between the two governments and advocated for the creation of repatriation centers in third countries.
