New EU rules limit PFAS in food packaging and make manufacturer markings mandatory from August.

According to the AISE agency, new rules under the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) came into effect on August 12 across the European Union. The main immediate change is the imposition of strict limits on polyfluoroalkyl substances, PFAS, known as "perpetual chemicals," in food contact packaging. Markings that allow for the identification and contact of manufacturers or importers are also now mandatory.

Most of the regulation's obligations will come into effect from 2030, including recyclability rules, reuse targets, and requirements for small-format disposable plastic packaging used in hotels and restaurants.
