The Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni He stated this Tuesday (30) that it is time for a right-wing figure to occupy the Presidency of the Republic and break the “Quirinale taboo”. The statement was made in an interview on the program “10 Minuti”, of Mediaset, the television network owned by the Berlusconi family.
“After breaking through the barrier of the Chigi Palace, the right can also break the taboo of the Quirinale Palace,” Meloni stated. “It would be terrible news for a certain part of the establishment, but it would affirm something very simple: those who are not on the left are not children of a lesser god.”
What is at stake
In 2022, Meloni became the first woman to hold the position of Prime Minister in Italy and the most right-wing head of government since World War II. The current president, Sergio Mattarella's, term ends only in 2029, after the 2027 legislative elections. In Italy, the head of state is elected by Parliament, not by popular vote.
The statement provoked immediate reactions from the opposition. Angelo Bonelli, of the Alliance of Greens and the Left (AVS), accused Meloni of trying to modify the electoral law to secure power. Francesco Boccia, leader of the Democratic Party (PD) in the Senate, was direct: "Giorgia Meloni is only interested in power, especially her own."
