Six honorary consular offices have been closed by the Italian government in Brazil. The decree, signed by the Deputy Director General for Resources and Innovation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Patrizia Falcinelli, has already been published in the Official Gazette.
The offices in Aracaju (SE), Nova Friburgo (RJ), Araraquara (SP), Franca (SP), Chapecó (SC) and Limeira (SP).
The reason for the decision, according to the ministry itself, is that the offices were inactive and inefficient. Some units, since their implementation – 5 years ago – operated only on paper, and never had the presence of a responsible officer.
With almost no representation, honorary consulates were supposed to provide assistance services, emergency or otherwise, to Italian descendants.
The list of closed offices also includes Finland, Lithuania, the United Kingdom, Romania, Switzerland, Lebanon, the United States, Ivory Coast, Cuba, Japan, Mexico, Somalia, Lesotho and Comoros.
